How to Brush a Dog's Coat
Brushing your dog's coat is an important part of caring for and taking care of your pet. While some short-haired breeds only need a light, rare brushing, long-haired breeds may need to be brushed daily, and some dogs may need special brushes or combs. When you brush your dog, it helps to keep the coat healthy by distributing natural oils in the dog's coat and keeping the dog comfortable. [1] Brushing will also remove excess hair from your dog's coat and prevent hair from landing on your carpet, furniture, or clothing. Always be careful when brushing a dog, as the coat and skin may be sensitive.


Examine the coat of your dog. When determining the length and consistency of your dog's fur, you can choose a brush and care products for your dog. Many popular dog breeds have short hair and a smooth coat, including Labrador retrievers and dog breeds. Many other breeds have longer, flowing coats. These include Spaniels, Setterrassen and Golden Retrievers. Terriers and similar species have short, wiry coats that need to be cared for so they do not become entangled. [2]
Some dog breeds like Yorkies have thin hair and delicate coats. These coats should be handled with care as the coat is delicate and does not protect the dog's skin as well as a thicker coat.
Finally, several breeds - often breeds - are "double coated". These dog coats are made up of two layers: a hard, wiry outer layer and a soft, insulating inner layer. Double-coated breeds include breeds of collies, shepherds and chows.
Choose a brush that fits your coat. A standard bristle brush is the most common type of brush and can be used on short-haired or smooth-coated breeds that require relatively little brushing. Pay attention to the bristle length: If your dog has a short, wiry coat, you will find a brush with short, tightly packed bristles. If your dog has a longer coat, look for a brush with longer and wider bristles. [3]
Buy a wire brush if your dog has long hair - especially if the coat is flowing or curly. The wire-pin bristles will burn through thick, curly hair more effectively than a bristle brush.
If necessary, buy more brushes and combs. For dogs with longer hair or more complex brushing requirements, you may need to purchase extra cleaning supplies. You can, for example, buy a slip brush to remove tangles and mats from your dog's coat and flatten the coat after brushing. [4] This is especially helpful for dogs with longer, curly hair.
You can also opt for a dog comb. Dog combs can be used to comb out the coat after removing a mat or tangle, and they are also used to dye the dog's coat in a cleaning contest.
If your dog has fleas or you fear that fleas may appear, buy a flea comb. This comb with very fine teeth can remove the fleas from your dog's coat.
